The East Union boys tennis team showed little rust in its first Valley Oak League match of the season Thursday, downing visiting Oakdale, 7-2.

The Lancers had their first two league matches postponed because of rain.

“They did a great job, both teams did,” East Union coach Rick Mitchell said. “It was real competitive on each side. Our guys stepped up to the plate and came out on top.”

It was definitely closer than the final result indicates with East Union pulling out several tightly-contested sets.

Luke Macias prevailed in the No. 1 match against Josh Niendorf, 6-2, 7-5. Macias battled back from a 1-4 deficit in the second set.

Andrew Rossette (6-2, 7-6 [7-5]), Kyle Niendorf (6-1, 6-1), Tim Lunauig (6-4, 7-5) and Jesus Ramirez (6-1, 6-0) also contributed singles points for the Lancers. Kyle Niendorf is the first cousin of Oakdale’s top player. Oakdale’s Spencer Kaizer beat Kevin Flores in the No. 2 match.

In doubles, the No. 2 Lancer tandem of Christian Rodriguez and Jake Kramer won, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2). Mario Zuniga and Raul Duenas also won in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2. Oakdale’s Shane Baxter and Robbie Baggly topped Marco Mata and Luis Gonzalez, 6-1, 6-7 (7-9), 7-5.

Kimball 9, Weston Ranch 0

The rebuilding Cougars struggled to keep up with the defending VOL champions in Tracy. Kimball, led by reigning singles titlist Garrett Chun, lost just three games in the six singles matches.

Weston Ranch’s No. 1 doubles team of Michael Cervantes and Jaspinder Grewal nearly extended its match with Jack Li and Bert Yu, holding a 5-4 advantage in the second set. They ended up losing, 1-6, 5-7.
