Lathrop High’s baseball team hosted a two-day, four-team jamboree and came away with its first win of 2014. The Spartans held off Ripon 6-4 in their morning game Saturday but came up short against Edison, 3-1.

Argonaut (4-0) triumphed in all three of its contests. Lathrop (1-3) and Edison each had one win, while Ripon (1-2-1) dropped two decisions and tied one.

In the Ripon game, Lathrop put together three-run rallies in the first and fourth innings and never trailed. The Indians threatened to come back in the top of the seventh after Nick Price (2 for 3, three runs) and Caleb Rogers (2 for 2, double two RBIs) plated the final runs with one out. Trent Murphy (singled) and Zach Horwood (walked) were on base, but Lathrop wiggled out of the jam with a groundout and popup.

Ripon had at least one runner on base in every inning and outhit the Spartans, 10-5. Lathrop, to its credit, capitalized on its fewer opportunities.

Carlos Estrada reached on an error to lead off the bottom half of the first and was driven home by Gabriel Rodriguez’s single. Miguel Castellanos knocked Rodriguez in, and Richard Chavez capped it off with an RBI groundout.

It was Chavez who sparked Lathrop’s fourth-inning flurry with a leadoff single. Reserve Jacob Nunes contributed an RBI single and a run in the inning.

Lathrop jumped out to a 1-0 lead early on against Edison but couldn’t come up with the clutch hits for the remainder of the game. Richie Juarez batted in Chavez with a knock to right in the second for the Spartans’ lone run.

The Spartans were limited to just one hit but walked five times and left five runners in scoring position. Edison scored the go-ahead and insurance runs in the sixth.
