East Union continued its shutout streak to start the season, improving to 3-0 overall with its 8-0 rout at Lathrop in the Valley Oak League opener for both clubs.

Scary thought: EU’s first-year head coach says there is much room for improvement.

“We played better tonight (than in their two nonleague wins),” Victor Polanco said. “We connected more passes but we’re still working on that. We have been practicing hard trying to move the ball from one side to the other, but overall we played better as a team.”

Lathrop coach Gabe Padilla was impressed.

“That East Union team is a talented bunch,” he said.

Leading the charge was fourth-year senior Isela Rivera, who added an assist to her hat-trick performance. Her freshman sister, Ilena Rivera, contributed two goals and an assist. Maddie Yslava also had two goals, Jenna Zuniga contributed one, and Meghan Wallace, Taylor Rose and Gina Dias each turned in an assist. Goalie Anna Wood recorded four saves.

“We had six shots on goal … last year we had only one the first time we played East Union and two in the second game,” Padilla said. “My girls worked hard and played really well in the first half. In the second half I could tell they were a little fatigued but they kept fighting.”

Padilla lauded the efforts of his keeper Cassandra Flores, who racked up 10 saves.
