USC-bound Bryce Dyrda proved to be too much for East Union on Tuesday as he no-hit the Lancers through five innings in a mercy-rule-shortened game won by Oakdale 13-0 win in Valley Oak League action at Agostini Field.

“This is not how we wanted to start league,” Lancers coach Dan Triglia said. “We thought we could compete. We got down 4-0 early and that changed the complexion of the game.

“Obviously Bryce Dyrda did a fantastic job. He throws hard and has a nice breaking ball and off-speed. We wanted to put some pressure on him and put the ball in play and we couldn’t do that. We get a chance to get back at them Thursday and maybe we can get a split.”

In the second inning East Union (0-1 VOL, 1-9 overall) forced an error off the bat of Kyle Emerson with teammates Brandon Ridgewell and Matt McGehee drawing walks to load the bases with one out, but Dyrda induced a groundout and notched his third of 10 strikeouts to end the threat.

“Dyrda can throw it a little bit,” Mustangs coach Nathan Gregory said. “He will probably go in the draft at some point, too.

“We have worked hard all week at making offensive adjustments and we were able to do so today. I thought our bats got better as the game went on and we ran the bases really well. It was a pretty clean game.”

Oakdale (3-0, 6-3) scored four runs in both the second and fourth innings and iced the game with a five-run fifth inning. Other than loading the bases in the seconds inning, the Lancers managed just one other base runner and that was when Marco Gonzales walked in the third inning.
