After opening the Valley Oak League schedule with losses to two contending programs, Manteca High’s swim teams picked up its first victories while braving the cold weather Tuesday in a double dual against visiting Lathrop and Weston Ranch.

The boys improved to 2-2, beating Lathrop 132-31 and Weston Ranch, 136-23. The Manteca girls also cruised past Lathrop 126-25 while topping Weston Ranch, 106-56.

Low participation continues to hamper Lathrop and Weston Ranch in the win-loss column, but Manteca coach Elyce Silva appreciates the fight they showed in Tuesday’s meet.

“I’m continually impressed by the way the Weston Ranch and Lathrop swim programs are growing,” she said. “It was great to see so many kids in the water today sticking it out in this nasty water.”

Most of the highlights belonged to Manteca.

The Buffalo boys won every race against both opponents.

Brandon Craighead (200 IM, 100 fly), Stephen Ruble (50 free, 100 free), Sterling Roberts (500 free, 100 breast) and Austin Welch) each won two individual events and two relays. Silva lauded first-year senior Mikey Hatfield for clocking his best time in the 50 free at 27.42 seconds. He was the runner-up in the event.

Weston Ranch’s girls tallied first-place points in the 50 freestyle and 200 free relay.

Haylee Both (200 IM, 100 free) and Chelsea Banta-Duval (100 fly, 500 free) were double winners for Manteca. Julia Saling (50 free, 100 breast) won two events against Lathrop but was edged out by Weston Ranch in the sprint. Tayler Bays (200 free) and Kassandra Diaz (100 back) contributed first-places finishes of their own. They all competed on winning relay teams, as well.
