It was a back-and-forth meet Wednesday between the Sierra and Kimball girls track and field teams, two early favorites for the Valley Oak League championship.

In the end, it was the host Jaguars of Tracy that pulled out a 64-60 victory. Sierra’s boys, meanwhile, triumphed 86-48 to remain undefeated through three dual meets.

“It was a heartbreaker,” Sierra coach Ezequiel Diaz said of his girls team’s first loss of the season. “It was a slugfest on the girls side. They fought hard, unfortunately they fell a little short today.”

Kimball got the edge by winning both relay events and sweeping the 200-meter dash. Sierra (2-1) went 1-2-3 in the 110 hurdles. Sophia Vucanovich did her part by claiming the 400 and 800, and McKenna Albrecht doubled in the discus throw and shot put.

Anthony Santiago also won both throwing events for the Sierra boys. Jonnythan Munkholm took first in the high jump and the triple jump.

The frosh-soph competition was also split: Kimball’s boys prevailed 90-35, and the Sierra girls recorded a 68-41 win.

Dikram Thiara (110, 300 hurdles) and Vanessa Padilla (discus, shot put) were Sierra’s top performers at the lower levels.
