Mike Mallory wants to put hunger on the run.

He knows that isn’t going to happen until more people are aware of those who are struggling to feed their families in the Northern San Joaquin Valley – the heart of the greatest food producing region in the world.

It is one of two reasons why the Second Harvest Food Bank is staging the Hit the Streets for Hunger 5K Run this Saturday on the first day of the Crossroads of California Street Fair in downtown Manteca. The other reason is to help raise funds for the Manteca-based non-profit serving as the distribution center for food that helps stock 220 food banks serving communities in Stanislaus and San Joaquin counties as well as the Sierra foothills.

“We want people to understand that hunger isn’t just around Christmas,” Mallory who serves as executive director for the food bank, has repeatedly noted. “Hunger is a problem 365 days a year. We’re hoping the run helps raise awareness.”

Hit the Streets for Hunger is a 5K Walk/Run with 1 mile and 5K courses along the Tidewater Bike Path starting in downtown Manteca near Library Park on Saturday.

It is a family friendly event and all ages are welcome to participate.

Registration forms are available at Second Harvest Food Bank, 704 Industrial Park Drive.

On the day of the event, registration and check in will begin at 7 a.m., the 1 mile race will begin at 8 a.m., and the 5K race will begin at 8:30 a.m.  The winners will be announced and awards will be given at 10 a.m. on the Gazebo Stage in Library Park.  Registration will be located at the corner of Elm and Center streets.

Entry fees are $25 for individuals and $50 for families.
