Squires race away from Ripon late

Zac Carrillo led all players with 23 points to lead East Union’s sophomore boys basketball team to a 60-49 victory over Ripon in the first round of the Block M Tournament Monday at Manteca High’s Winter Gym.

T.J. Williams chipped in three points but did most of his work under the hoop, where he ripped down 18 rebounds.

The Squires, who led 26-24 at halftime, jump started the fourth quarter with a 12-1 run to go up by 20 points.

East Union plays Manteca or Tracy today in the semifinals.

In other Block M Tournament action:

Edison 74, Sierra 65
The Timberowolves dropped a heartbreaker in overtime despite three players finishing in double figures.

Bret Wilson led the way with 17 points, Joseph Berry had 16 and Tim Thornton pumped in 12.

 

Freshman

Ripon Ch. 42, E. Union 40
East Union (3-2) had two opportunities to tie it in the final minute but couldn’t get the shots to drop.

Will Brink scored 13 points to pace East Union, while Justin Ontiveros finished with 12. Up next for EU is the loser of Monday’s Tracy-Manteca contest.
