Less than two weeks after suffering its first Valley Oak League loss of the season, Manteca had the opportunity to exact revenge Monday at Kimball.

Thomas Reza pulled out the clinching victory, and the Buffaloes downed the defending league champions from Tracy, 6-3.

“I thought we needed a little more time (to practice before the rematch with Kimball), but we were definitely ready to play,” Manteca coach Frank Fontana said. “It was just a different atmosphere today starting with the warm-ups. They showed me that they wanted to win the league title.”

Reza squeaked out a 7-5, 7-5 win over Blake Howerton in the No. 5 singles match. Reza trailed early 0-3 and battled through two set-point situations when down 4-5.

“Thomas just found a way,” Fontana said. “He just grinded out the win.”

Mike Lopez (6-3, 6-0) and Alex Vasquez (6-4, 6-4) also won their singles contests. Spencer Jackson dropped a three-set decision to Ivan Acosta, 2-6, 6-3, 2-6. Reigning VOL champ Garrett Chun dispatched Manteca’s Yok-Jing Ma 6-1, 6-4.

Manteca, now 7-1 in league, dominated in doubles play. Winning tandems were Nolan Osborn and Yok-Eyh Ma (6-1, 6-0), Edvin Pepic and Yayha Shabbar (6-2, 6-0) and Kyle Thornberg and Si Hao Tang (6-2, 6-4).

“We still have to play Sonora twice, so who knows what’s going to happen,” Fontana said. “This will be for nothing if we can’t back it up.”
