Manteca swings by Sierra for VOL victory

Manteca’s top two singles players Yok-Jing Ma and Mike Lopez didn’t waste time picking up wins on Wednesday during the Buffaloes’ 8-1 Valley Oak League victory over cross-town rival Sierra.

Ma, the Buffaloes’ No. 1 singles player, knocked off Keegan D’Souza in straight sets (6-0, 6-1), while Lopez (No. 2) swept Laic Berge, 6-0, 6-0.

“Yok and Mike have continued to play great this season,” Manteca head coach Frank Fontana said. “They have led us, and I hope they keep playing this well for the rest of the season.”

Sierra’s No. 4 singles player Adam Searle picked up the Timberwolves’ only point with a 6-3, 7-6 (3) win over Spencer Jackson.

Manteca’s No. 3 Gino Mercado defeated Mark Paule Jr. 6-0, 6-0, while the Buffaloes’ No. 5 singles player Thomas Reza dropped Josh Hernandez-Simpauco 6-2, 6-2. Alex Vasquez finished off singles play by beating Sierra’s Anthony Alcantar, 6-4, 6-3.

“We just want to keep this winning streak going so we can win the (VOL) title,” Fontana said. “We just want to keep getting better and everything will take care of itself.”

In doubles play, Yok-Eyh Ma and Nolan Osborn beat Sierra’s No. 1 doubles duo of Allen Len and Stephen Gott 6-4, 6-2. Manteca’s Yayha Shabbar and Edvin Pepic defeated Zach Gosney and Simon Marquez 6-0, 6-3. Kyle Thornburg and Si Hao Tang tallied up a 6-0, 6-4 win over Sierra’s No. 3 doubles combo of Josh Asterga and Josh Hermosillo.

Kimball 7, Weston Ranch 2

The Cougars picked up a pair of points from their second and third doubles teams and avoided getting swept by the Jaguars, who are tied in a first-place VOL tie with Manteca. Michael Cervantes and Nick Salvador defeated Kimball’s Rick Nguyen and Jack Li 3-6, 6-4, 7-6, while Weston Ranch’s No. 3 doubles tandem of Steven Toledo and Vincent Agrabio won 6-1, 6-4. The Cougars’ No. 3 doubles team Jaspinder Grewall and Adam Lee lost in straight sets, 6-4, 6-. Weston Ranch will face the Buffaloes today and then will be at East Union Friday afternoon.
