Even the little ones had a chance to get behind a wheel of an ambulance during Wednesday's story time at Manteca District Ambulance headquarters.

Ruthanne Bassett enjoys her job.

For the past nine years, she’s been the Manteca Library Branch’s Story time Lady, entertaining youngsters with songs and books.

“We never miss a Thursday,” said Kristin Staup, who is a story time regular thanks to her 3-year-old son Alex.

But Wednesday was special. She and her son attended their first-ever story time outside the local library branch.

They were among the group of nearly 40 to make story time at the Manteca District Ambulance Service.  “I’m really surprised at how many adults are here,” said Bassett, giving a quick head count of a bit over 20 youngsters.

She read several books, including “What’s Inside an Ambulance,” “How Do Dinosaurs Get Well,” and “Barney is the Best.”

The youngsters received a special treat of seeing inside an ambulance.

“Most of the kids see the fire department together with the ambulance department,” said Angela Ott, public information and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). “We’re unique in that our ambulance and fire departments are separate.”

Incidentally, the Story Time youngsters visited the local fire department last month, and will have a chance at being entertained by stories and songs while taking a tour at Save Mart, 1431 W. Yosemite Ave., at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 18.

EMT Matt Lopez provided the tour of the ambulance facilities.

“This place is like our second home,” he said. “We’re here 78 to 48 hours at a time, three days a week.”

Ott, meanwhile, was keeping her fingers crossed from getting that emergency call.

No dice.

She received a call, responding with another EMT while giving Story Time youngsters with a special treat of seeing the local crew in action.

Lopez continued the tour, allowing youngsters to sit inside of an actual ambulance.

Staup and her son enjoyed their visit to the Manteca District Ambulance. They’re looking forward to more Story Time outings.
