Josefa ‘Pepa’ Mercado

Josefa “Pepa” Mercado, 77, entered into rest on April 15, 2014 in Manteca, Ca. She was born on September 17, 1936 in Chihuahua, Mexico. She joins her parents in heaven Victoriano and Eusebia Cervantes and one sister Maria Cervantes Garcia.

Mrs. Mercado is survived by her loving husband of 61 years Jose Mercado. She is survived by her children; Luis Mercado (Margarita), Irma Mercado (Larry), Carolina Verdugo (Daniel) and Raul Mercado (Ronda). She was blessed by 9 grandchildren Luis Mercado, Esmeralda Cabrales, Jade Mercado, Andrew Staton, Larry Staton, Jame Staton, Daniel Verdugo, Victoria Vardugo, Veronica Verdugo, Juliana Mercado, Monica Poor, Rudy Mercado Jr., Jose Mercado, Emanual Mercado, Francesca Mercado, Maria Mercado and David Staton. In addition she is survived by 26 great-grandchildren.

 Josefa was loving known by her by family and friends as Pepa. She was a member of both St. Anthony’s and Our Lady of Guadalupe Church; where she took pride in participating in her church choir. She was a significant leader in Los Matachines dance group in Lathrop where she taught dancing and was their official seamstress. She was passionate of her Mexican heritage as she loved to tell stories about her upbringing and ancestry. She had a special love and compassion for all animals as her kindheartedness always gravitate towards the homeless animals; feeding, bathing and nurturing them. Pepa’s true love was for her family. She was at her happiest when cooking and hosting many events for her family and friends always loving on everyone who visited. Pepa will be remembered as a loving mother, a wonderful grandma and devoted wife. She will be missed.

P.L. Fry & Son is honored to be serving the Mercado family. A visitation will be on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at 3 to 7 p.m. followed by a rosary at 7:00 p.m. both held at P.L. Fry & Son 290 N. Union Rd. Manteca. A mass will be held on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. St. Anthony’s Catholic Church 525 E. North ST. Manteca. She will be laid to rest at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery.
