STOCKTON – Peyton Rose struck out seven and allowed just one runner to third Tuesday to lead Manteca to a 6-0 win over host Weston Ranch in Valley Oak League softball action.

“I didn’t notice,” Rose said of only one Cougars base runner getting to third base. “I worry about getting the batters out and I let the catcher worry about the runners.”

Sophomore Morgan Miramontes led off the game for the Buffaloes (6-5 VOL, 9-7) with a single and did the job of a leadoff batter, reaching base four times in five trips going 2 for 3 with a double and two walks.

“All I think of when I am up to bat is that I need to get on base,” Miramontes said. “And we did a good job with our bats today. We were able to get our runners in.”

Although Manteca racked up nine hits, only two were for extra bases – a triple by Tawny Deerinck in the third inning and Miramontes’ double in the sixth. Both eventually scored. Sierra Martinez added two RBI for the Buffaloes, going 2 for 3 with a walk.

Manteca started the day with five league losses and in fourth place, two games behind third-place Sierra with three teams going to the playoffs.

“With the situation we are in right now, if we win out, we are going to the playoffs,” Buffaloes coach Corey Navarro said. “So we have to take one game at a time and play smart.

“But we need to play to win. We made a few mistakes, but other than that we played great.”

Weston Ranch (3-8, 8-10) got runners on base in four innings with Vanessa Contreras going 2 for 4.

“We had our opportunities,” Cougars coach Janelle Bauer said. “It is disappointing that we are not performing at the level we should.

“It is not about a lack of opportunities – it is about not converting the opportunities we have.”
