Cultural and traditional pride will be on display Saturday for the annual Punjabi American Association Manteca “Bringing Communities Together” event.

The annual Vaisakhi Mela will take place at Dutra South East Park, 1850 Sparrowhawk St. Manteca, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

“The morning will mostly be traditional games and other events while the afternoon (from 3 to 7) will be all cultural,” said spokesman Mandeep Bhuller.

This community-wide event brings in folks from Lathrop, Tracy, Modesto, French Camp and other nearby areas.

Bhuller noted that Gold Star military families – that’s those who lost a loved one serving their country during the war in the Middle East – as well as those with Purple Hearts (wounded in combat) will be honored for the first time in the history of this event.

Admission is free.

The highlights of the day will also include:

• Vaisakhi bumper raffle of a 55-inch flat screen television, 10-inch tablet, Sony Playstation, bicycle, home audio system and other items.

• Traditional fun games for the youngsters.

• Tug of war.

• Games and sports for people of all ages.

• Bhangra and Gidha folk dancing.

People celebrating their heritage during this event can often trace their roots to the Punjab region between eastern Pakistan and northern India.

Harminder Samana will serve as emcee for the sporting events while Asha Sharma will host the cultural events.
