Sophomore T’Wolves hold on for victory

Joseph Berry led three scorers in double figures with 14 points, and the Sierra High sophomore boys basketball team repelled the relentless Sonora Wildcats for a 48-47 home win to open the Valley Oak League season.

Johnny Waggy added 13 points for the Timberwolves, and Tim Thornton added 10.

Sierra jumped ahead early but allowed Sonora to climb back with a big run in the second quarter. Sierra sealed it in the final minute with key free throws.

East Union 48, Ceres 41
CERES — The Squires (1-0 VOL, 6-2 overall) were ahead 20-12 after a fast-paced opening quarter and maintained the lead the rest of the way thanks to a stifling defense that forced 17 turnovers.

Wayne Cheung pumped in a team-high 17 points, and Brock Swift added nine.

Oakdale 62, Manteca 57
At Manteca’s Winter Gymnasium, the Buffaloes (0-1) fell behind 16-2 to start but cut the deficit to five with 2 minutes remaining in the contest.

B.J. O’Dell led the comeback charge with 17 points, while Ruben Alvarez, Tim Baker and Matt Carle each turned in eight.

Central Valley 52, Lathrop 42
CERES — Down just four going into the fourth, the Spartans (0-1, 2-7) couldn’t get over the hump in crunchtime in their regular-season opener.

Marcus Conley had 10 points to lead Lathrop, and Gabe Castellanos contributed eight.

Sophomore girls
East Union 37, Ceres 13
At Dalben Center, the Squires (1-0, 6-4) scored all of the game’s 10 first-quarter points and went on a 16-5 run in the second to run away with it.

Allison Telles produced 13 point in limited time, Klasey Kachalkin had 10 and Kristen Piasecki finished with eight.

Central Valley 39, Lathrop 23
LATHROP — Chanel Johnson led Lathrop (0-1, 2-7) with seven points and eight rebounds, and Kristen Rallios chipped in with four and seven.

Freshman boys
Manteca 45, Oakdale 32
Reshawn Bell and Aaron Ramos led the charge with 12 points apiece, while Nick Garcia finished with nine.

Manteca (1-0, 4-4) also got a solid effort on the defensive end from Rodney Fryer who also chipped in four points.

East Union 63, Ceres 37
CERES — The Pages (1-0, 6-2) broke it open early, taking a 38-20 halftime lead before cruising. Justin Nieto and Jesus Esquivel led a balanced scoring effort with 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Freshman girls
Lathrop 37, Central Valley 34
LATHROP — Celina Desantis poured in a game-high 17 points to lead Lathrop to its first VOL victory in the regular-season opener Tuesday.

Briana Bobadilla added eight points.

Oakdale 39, Manteca 28
OAKDALE — Jasmine O’Dell was a bright spot for Manteca with a 10-point effort.
