With a chance to grab a share of the Trans-Valley League coed tennis title, Ripon High came up short Tuesday in a 5-4 loss to visiting Escalon.

The Indians settle for second place with an 8-2 record but completed a big turnaround from last year’s two-win finish.

Escalon captured the outright championship thanks to two hotly-contested matches decided in third sets. Marc Ney topped Ripon’s Bryce Coutrakis 6-3, 2-6, 10-8 in the No. 2 boys singles match. In the No. 1 girls doubles match, Shannon Wesley and Maddison Flanders of Ripon fell 7-6 (15), 6-7 (3), 2-6 against Taylor Busch and Maggie Casteel.

Jeremy Parks defeated Ashton Redberg 7-5, 7-5 for Ripon’s lone singles point. The Nathan Machado-Ian Flanders (6-0, 6-2) and Isaiah Sanchez-Davis Armstrong (6-1, 6-0) boys tandems prevailed for the Indians. Alyssa Demara and Hailey Johnson won the No. 2 girls doubles contest, 6-3, 6-2.
