The silver van parked out in front of Binford’s Custom Cycles requires a double check nearly every time you see it.

That’s because on the door is a circular logo that is almost identical to the size, layout and placement of those that City of Manteca vehicles sport – the ones that maintain parks and clean-up gutters and pick up your trash.

But a closer look reveals something different. A chopper-style motorcycle and a pair of brass knuckles – one of the trademarks of the custom bike builder – adorn the bottom of the logo that was incorporated to pay tribute to the community that has for nearly two decades helped owner Paul Binford turn a small shop into a nationally-recognized facility for some of the baddest machines on two wheels.

Detailed chrome.

Custom paint.

Insane designs.

The reputation he has established just recently earned him a spot on Discovery Channel’s “Biker Build-Off,” which will pit him against another well-known Northern California fabricator.

And if you ask owner Paul Binford, that’s all because of the crew he has assembled – a group that has transformed the shop from a small, parts house into a bike-building machine that has created motorcycles designed to set records in the Bonneville Salt Flats and won Best of Show at the annual Sturgis Rally in South Dakota.

“I’ve got a crew here with guys like Tanner Shackley – my motor tech – that have helped us become the most reliable shop in the area when it comes to big motors, bar none,” Binford said. “And while we put a lot on our painter, Rico Saldana, we’re able to get everything done in house.

“I tell a lot of new businesses that if you’re going to do something, you’ve got to do it all the way. If you open without a bar license or without all of the paperwork in order, you aren’t going to make it. With the guys that we have we’re able to do everything that we need to right here, and that makes all of the difference in the world.”

A quick spin around the inside of Binford’s Custom Cycles is like a trip through a custom Harley museum. Bikes of every style – from full customs to overhauled factory models – fill the floor, and all of them sport custom paint jobs and chrome detailing and the little things that have helped set Binford apart from all of the rest.

Each piece is like a rolling work of art with the style of the individual builder’s personality and technique shining through. Every piece is methodically thought out and placed. Every stripe and every detail and every bolt is carefully laid out during the process catalogued before everything is assembled and put together.

The end result is beautiful and intense and violent – all at the same time. And it’s something that has served Binford well over the years.

“Doing things that are custom is what we’re known for – whether it’s a motor or paint or handlebars,” Binford said. “That’s a good thing in this community to be known for.”
