The Stepping Up for Children 5-kilometer Walk-A-Thon is planned for Saturday, May 10, along the Manteca Tidewater Bikeway.

Proceeds will benefit the Hearts & Hands Pregnancy and Family Resource Center. Executive Director Cynthia Juarez would like to see 200 walkers come out for this first-ever event.

“We’re hoping to increase a strong sense of community by having a blast and raising money to help the children in our community,” she said.

Hearts & Hands is a pilot program aimed at reversing the troubling trend of the absentee teen-aged father.

In the fatherhood program, for example, the troubled young dad receives training on the responsibilities of raising a child. That father must agree to be part of the program moving forward.

The program also helps out young mothers as well.

Prior to Hearts & Hands, youngsters had to travel to Stockton to receive such services.

As for the Walk-A-Thon – a Bingo Night was held earlier this year to help fund the cause – the 5K event will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., beginning at Northgate Park on Hoyt Lane and Northgate Drive.

Registration is available at Hearts & Hands, 107 W. North St. Suite 103 Manteca on Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cost is $20.

Each participant will receive a sports bag full of goodies, with those pre-registering getting a free lunch compliments of Hearts & Hands.

Games, entertainment and food will be part of the event.

Those raising the most money will be in the running for the top prizes. Included is golf for four at Spring Creek Country Club in Ripon, an acoustic guitar coupled with one month of lessons at Janis Music, and AMC Movies tickets and a Red Robin gift card.
