What are you doing this weekend?

May is National Military Appreciation Month, so no wonder the events this month are all about serving the country and celebrating those who served. Everything will eventually lead to a Memorial Day celebration at Woodward Park in Manteca, but until then you can honor veterans in different ways. Welcome Home Heroes presents John Corbett at the Fat Cat in Modesto (930 11th Street, Modesto) tonight at 6 p.m. If his name sounds familiar to you, it’s because Corbett played Aiden, the handy furniture designer and love interest of Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City. Remember now? John Corbett and his band will entertain you for a good cause – all proceeds go to U.S. veterans and their families. If you would like to donate to veterans directly, get your fanciest clothes on, because Evening of Honor, a fundraiser for the upcoming Not Forgotten Memorial Day event complete with dinner, program and an auction, will take place on Friday, May 9, at 6 p.m. at the Place of Refuge on Button Avenue. Price: $25 (John Corbett)

Always wanted to paint, but too afraid to try? Maybe a drink will help you to lighten up and “uncork” you inner Picasso. Sip-n-Paint Mother’s Day Party at Whirlow’s (1926 Pacific Avenue, Stockton) is a great chance to try something new and fun, like painting with an actual brush on an actual canvas. After you order your drink of choice, you will get a smock to put on – creativity can be messy – and your friendly instructors take you step-by-step through the brush strokes of the painting of the night. No experience is necessary and you will be provided with everything you need to complete your masterpiece: Canvas, paint, brushes, and apron. Just show up and voila, in 4 hours you have your painting to take home! You can exercise your passion for art (and drinks) on Saturday, May 10, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Price: $55 (includes lunch) Learn more here at
