East Union 2013 graduate Will Brink, now entering his sophomore season at UC Davis, pieced together a solid round of 69 Sunday that helped him win his second straight Manteca City Golf Championship at the two-day tournament hosted by the Manteca Parks Golf Course.

Brink shot a 75 on Saturday, followed by a 69 Sunday that included six birdies and helped him repeat as city champion with a 144.

“Will was definitely disappointed (Saturday),” East Union head coach Dennis Wells said. “He had a good round going except for a couple bad holes. He just came back (Sunday) and felt way more comfortable even with the wind.”

Brink trailed by three strokes heading into the second day. Jesse Contreras (third place) shot a 72 on the first day and held the lead. Contreras, Brink and current East Union sophomore Brooke Riley were part of the last foursome of leaders on Sunday.

Contreras and Brink were tied through 11 holes Sunday, and Brink birdies the 12th and 13th to pull away with the tournament.

“(Contreras) played at Stanislaus one year,” Wells said. “He just kind of fell apart and didn’t play that well coming down the home stretch.”

Contreras finished with a 77 to score a 149, five strokes behind Brink. Jeff Burda took second place with a 148 with a 76-72.

Riley, who was the only female in the tournament, finished in a tie for eighth with a 76-79 (155) out of the field of 35 men.

Another East Union player, Nick Rounsaville, shot a 77-82 (159) and finished near the bottom of the leader board.

“Riley struggled on the front (Sunday),” Wells said. “But she outplayed the boys on the back and shot a one-under.”
