Cesar Campos wants to make sure that his customers get the absolute best value possible when they’re stocking their pantry.

For the last month, Campos – one of two owners of the new Groceries 4 Less complex that recently opened near the corner of Louise Avenue and North Main Street – has been working to turn his discount grocery outlet into a major destination for Manteca residents watching their wallets and hoping to stretch their dollar as far as possible.

With the economy the way that it currently is, Campos said, maximizing savings is something that many people are trying to perfect while working as hard as possible to stay afloat.

“When it comes to groceries and food, it’s something that’s a need and not a want, and we’re hoping to provide that to people at the lowest possible price,” said Campos from his office overlooking the store. “So far the community has responded very well, and we’re hoping to get even more interest from customers who appreciate not overpaying for their essentials.”

Interestingly enough, it was Campos’ own mother that got the young entrepreneur – who at the time already owned a Dairy Queen/Orange Julius inside of a local mall – interested in the grocery business by bragging about her savings on a can of Campbell’s soup.

After paying only $1 for an item that Campos said he was used to paying nearly four times as much for at his local grocery store, he got in touch with a friend that owned the Groceries 4 Less in Modesto and expressed his interest in breaking in to the market – something that until that point he had never thought would have been in the cards.

And now he’s overseeing a unique and cost-effective operation that has attracted just about every type of shopper imaginable – all with the goal of saving money.

Down one aisle an extensive array of Pepsi-Cola products ranging from single cans to 12-packs are available for greatly reduced prices. In the corner closest to the checkout stand, cases upon cases of sports drinks like Vitamin Water, Gatorade, and Propel offer shoppers a wide variety to choose from.

“When it comes to business you have to take risks, but food is something that people need to survive,” he said. “I realized that by opening something like this in a community like Manteca that didn’t have a discount grocery store that I’d be able to help people get much better bang for their buck.

“Our motto is brand name products at bargain prices, and that’s something we strive to provide every day.”

Currently Groceries 4 Less employs somewhere in the neighborhood of 15 people, and plans are already being discussed to possibly expand to another location in the immediate area to offer the savings to an entirely different group of people.

“We’re proud to be a part of Manteca, and so far the town has been good to us,” Campos said. “We welcome anybody that’s looking to save a little bit of money during these tough times.”

Groceries 4 Less is located at 1080 N. Main Street inside of Cardoza Center near the intersection of Louise Avenue and North Main Street. The store is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. For more information, call 239-5377.
