Manteca could potentially be two wins away from a Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV baseball championship after it knocked off Cosumnes Oaks-Elk Grove 5-2 in the opener of Saturday’s best-of-three semifinal series at Lodi’s Zupo Field.

The Buffaloes (23-3) could advance to next Monday’s section championship game if they could knock off Cosumnes Oaks (21-9) one more time Tuesday at 4 p.m. If not, the “if-necessary” game will follow.

Manteca’s Lucas Vaughn earned the win Saturday and is still unbeaten at 11-0 with a 1.16 ERA. He threw 6 2/3 innings and gave up six hits, two runs, walked one and struck out five.

Alex Jorgensen, who went 2 for 3 with a run and two RBIs, gave up one hit and got the close.

Manteca scored two in the top of the second and led 3-0 after four. The Buffaloes tacked on two more in the seventh to make it 5-0 before Cosumnes Oaks scored two of its own in the bottom of seven.

Ezequiel Diaz went 3 for 3 with a double, two runs and an RBI while Michael Garibay and Dominick Pisano had two hits apiece.

Buddy Reeder went 1 for 4 and Brandon Landwehr was 1 for 3 with a run. Joe Menzel had an RBI and Vaughn had the last of the five runs.

Vista del Lago 6,
 Sierra 3

The Timberwolves (21-5) dropped their semifinal series opener against the Eagles after giving up three runs with two outs on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The game was tied at three apiece heading into six when a misplayed ball in right field  eventually resulted in Vista del Lago’s final three runs coming across.

Sierra will now meet Vista del Lago in an elimination game Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Zupo Field. If the T’Wolves can survive that one the winner-take-all Game 3 will follow.
