SAN DIEGO (AP) — A dead whale that washed up on shore in San Diego will get a sea burial.

Television station KGTV in San Diego reported Tuesday  that the 50-foot fin whale washed up onto the sand on Monday near the Point Loma Wastewater Treatment Plant.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration biologist Susan Chivers says her organization took samples of the whale’s tissue to find out its gender and possible health problems.

KGTV reports that the Marine Conservation Institute plans to send a boat Wednesday when high tides are expected to tow the dead whale more than 20 miles into the ocean so fish can feed on it.
