Lady Spartans come back to stun Sierra

Trailing by 10, 34-24, going into the final period, Lathrop High’s sophomore girls basketball team pieced together a 15-6 run to stun Sierra 43-40 on the road Tuesday.

Martina Carrillo drilled the go-ahead 3-pointer to make it 37-36 with 4:03 remaining, and the Spartans (2-2 Valley Oak League, 4-9 overall) never looked back.

Janet Visaya nailed two free throws with under a second left to ice the win and finish with 14 points. Lathrop got dominant play from the post, where Chanel Johnson poured in 19 points.

Sierra was led by Alison Armstrong’s 10 points, four rebounds and five steals. Kaley Bresina added 10 points; Onyx Malone pulled down 11 rebounds; and Shelby Shirron posted four points, eight rebounds, four steals and six blocks.

In other sophomore girls basketball action Tuesday:

Manteca 54, Ceres 26
The Buffaloes have not missed a beat since a league opening one-point loss to Oakdale, reeling off their third consecutive win in blowout fashion over Ceres.

Manteca (3-1) got another solid effort from Mia Ramirez, who led all scorers with 25 points. Ramirez also dished out three assists and swiped five steals. Breanne Hatfield and Jimi Guibor controlled the backboards, collecting 11 and 10 rebounds, respectively.
 
Sophomore boys
Sierra 45, Lathrop 35
The Timberwolves (4-0, 8-4) pushed their winning streak to six games with the win over the Spartans. Tim Thornton led all scorers with 15 points, while Joseph Berry added eight and Johnny Waggy seven. Mike Leland chipped in with five in the win. Ricky Chavez led the Spartans with 16 points.

Weston Ranch 50, Sonora 49
SONORA – Dylan Alexander and Marlon Aumentado led the Cougars’ attack, scoring 19 and 14, respectively.
 
Freshman boys
Sierra 65, Lathrop 31
LATHROP – The Timberwolves had little difficulty remaining undefeated, blasting the host Spartans for their fourth straight win to open the league season.

Sierra (4-0) was led by Marc Wilson’s 17-point effort, while teammate Guillermo Nunez registered behind him with 15. Both Emmanuel Elijah and Justin Patton chipped in with eight apiece.

Ceres 48, Manteca 43
CERES — The Buffaloes (3-1, 6-5) dropped their first VOL game Tuesday despite 12 points from Reshawn Bell. Nick Burrows added 10 points.

Weston Ranch 44, Sonora 25
SONORA – Zerrion Payton led the Cougars with 24 points and teammate Lucky Tango eight points.

Frosh girls
Sierra 37, Lathrop 31
Asia Cortez pumped in 19 points to go with nine rebounds and four steals to lead Sierra’s double-overtime victory.
Valerie Nester contributed 10 points, 20 rebounds and four steals for the Timberwolves (2-2), and Barbara Baxter reeled in 12 rebounds.

Manteca 36, Ceres 25
Jasmine O’dell paced the Buffaloes with 12 points, while teammates Manveer Hunda and Adaeze Nkwocha added eight and six, respectively.
