The police officer injured after being attacked by a vagrant he had attempted to stop is recuperating after being treated and released from an area hospital.

Manteca Police Officer Ben Cromwell was taken to Doctors Hospital of Manteca Wednesday night after a seemingly random stop of a pair of transients behind an East Yosemite Avenue car wash turned violent.

Robert Olvera Sr., a 48-year-old transient, attacked Cromwell and started fighting with him alongside the Showtime Express Car Wash directly across the street from the In-Shape Health Club near where Pestana Avenue intersects with East Yosemite Ave.

Cromwell, who fended off the attack, called for immediate backup and the call brought a department-wide response that included plainclothes gang officers that had been out patrolling. He suffered injuries to his hand and groin and was treated and ultimately released.

Olvera suffered facial and rib injuries and was taken to San Joaquin General Hospital. He had not been booked into San Joaquin County Jail as of Thursday afternoon. He is being charged with battery on a police officer and resisting arrest. Both counts are misdemeanors.
