OAKDALE – Opening the game on a blistering 12-0 run gave the Sierra High varsity boys basketball team all the cushion it would need in a 57-32 Valley Oak League win over the Oakdale Mustangs Friday.

Sierra (4-1 VOL, 11-5 overall) got off the to the fast start behind the lights-out shooting of guard Eddie Andrade, who nailed four 3-pointers in that pivotal first period. Andrade’s scoring and a team-defensive effort was enough to push Sierra ahead with a 30-10 halftime lead.

The win puts Sierra in a first-place tie with idle Manteca and Weston Ranch. Weston Ranch beat East Union 76 - 56 on Friday.

“We opened with good intensity on defense on our full-court and half-court sets,” Sierra head coach Scott Thomason said. “I thought that bothered them a little bit, and we were pretty fortunate that they didn’t shoot the ball too well.

“We just had a great first half all the way around.”

The Timberwolves refused to let up, pushing the game out of reach with a 17-8 third quarter run.

Andrade led all scorers with 21 points on seven 3-pointers, while teammate Will Ward added a double-double, scoring 10 points and pulling down 13 rebounds. Ward also added four blocks for good measure.

Oakdale (2-3, 5-9) was led by junior Jake Martinez who paced the Mustangs with 20 points.

Sierra will try and make it three league wins in a row when they play host to the Manteca Buffaloes Wednesday.

Ceres 68, Lathrop 30

CERES – The Spartans (0-6, 0-16) fell behind early and could not recover, dropping their VOL road contest to the Bulldogs.

Ceres (3-3, 9-8) opened up on a 23-3 run after the first period, snatching any Lathrop hope for an upset. Umar Muriset led the Spartans with 12 points and teammate Aivery Lewis chipped in six. Ceres was led by Justin Cantatsy’s 13 points.
