MODESTO - The Modesto Film Society launches its sixth season with a screening of the musical “The Sound of Music”, winner of five academy awards, including Best Picture of 1965, on Sunday, Jan.18, at 3 p.m., at Modesto’s Historic State Theatre.

Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer star in this Rogers and Hammerstein spectacular based on this true life story of the Austrian Von Trapp family who must leave their country to escape persecution by the Nazis.

Film goers are invited to come a half an hour early in order to practice their sing along skills on “Do Re Mi,” “My Favorite Things,” “Climb Every Mountain” and other favorites. Those attending Film Society events are always encouraged to dress as a character from the film.

Tickets for the films are $8 each and are available at the State Theatre box office weekdays from noon to 3 p.m., at www.thestate.org by calling 527-4697, or at the door. Discounts are available for Film Society members.

More information is available at 521-8772, modestofilm@aol.com or on the web at www.modestofilm.org.

The Film Society’s next film is 1950’s Best Picture “All About Eve”, featuring Bette Davis, Ann Baxter and George Sanders on Sunday, Feb. 21.
