The Reverend Chuck Roots has retired as the pastor of the Ripon Free Methodists Church.

He was lauded with a dinner in his honor was held by his church community with 120 in attendance with the deep renditions by the Golden Valley Chorus barbershop directed by Bruce Sellnow.

In addition to his pastoral duties, Roots is a member of the barbershop group that serenaded moms and grandmothers in Ripon and the surrounding communities for Mother’s Day. He also authors a thought-provoking weekly newspaper column.

Church members presented a memory book to their pastor and his wife Isaura filled with photos of happy times, letters and other memorabilia. It was another special moment for him when 13-year-old Abby Pendleton spoke from her heart: “I want to thank you for your service. Sundays have been the highlight of my week,” she said.

The Roots’ youngest daughter, Jenny Sousa noted, “My parents are the real deal. What you see is what you get and it’s the same way behind closed doors. Thank you for being the best example of a Christian since I’ve seen many fake Christians in my life.”

One of the singers from the barbershop chorus Herb Andrew added, “You were Marine and I was Navy…I never heard you preach but you’re the type of enlisted man I would have liked to be in a foxhole with, and as a navy Captain you are the type of officer I’d be honored to serve under! Thank you!”

Forest Bush, superintendent of the Sierra Pacific Conference then spoke thanking Pastor Chuck for his time at the Ripon Free Methodist Church saying that Chuck was pastor, shepherd, patriot – the evening was a beautiful time honoring these two servants of God, he said.
