LATHROP — Everything appeared to be going well for the first-year varsity Lathrop Spartans Tuesday night as they battled intra-district rival Weston Ranch.

While the Spartans had their hands full with a Cougar team that had just beat three-time Valley Oak League champion East Union, Lathrop jumped out to an early lead that they would hold at the end of the first quarter.

But by the time Weston Ranch’s Timnesha Wilson, Emily Medeiors, and Jazmin Strane started hitting their shots, that narrow lead disappeared almost instantly as the Cougars ran away with a 74-48 victory to move Weston Ranch into a three-way tie in the standings with Manteca and Sonora.

“We’ve had problems all year long with being able to hit those shots, but in the second and third quarters we were finally able to put it all together,” said Weston Ranch head coach Chris Bauer. “Lathrop came out and did a good job defending us tonight, and some people tend to overlook them because they’re a young team.

“We knew that we were going to have to play good basketball tonight in order to come out with a win.”

Weston Ranch (4-2 VOL, 11-6 overall) scored 50 points in the second and third quarters, enough to put the game out of each for Lathrop (0-7, 2-15).

With Wilson leading the Cougars with 22 points, Strane added 12 while recording three assists and five blocks.

Lathrop freshman Jazlyn Simon posted an impressive 15 points, while Brittney Rallios chipped in 11.

“Doing well in the first quarter seems to be the way that we’ve done things this year, and then for some reason we just can’t keep up,” said Lathrop head coach Ed Fang. “We’ve got a young team – we’re starting a freshman, a sophomore, and three juniors – and going up against good teams like Weston Ranch will only make us better in the future.”
