With more heavy rains, thunderstorm and winds gusting past 40 mph in today’s forecast, “Select San Joaquin Ag Venture 2010” has been canceled.

Instead, the event at the San Joaquin County Fairgrounds has been rescheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 17, according to Manteca resident and coordinator Janet Dyk.

About 4,000 third-grade students from Stockton and Lincoln school districts were looking forward to this day of experiencing everything from sheep shearing to goat milking to presentations on production and processing.

They’ll have to wait out another month.

“We (also) lost a few of our guest presenters with schedule change,” Dyk said on Tuesday.

She’s now looking for volunteers to fill the vacant slots. Those interested can contact Dyk at (209) 823-5013.

“Select San Joaquin” is a partnership of San Joaquin County, SJ Farm Bureau, Rancho San Miguel, Food 4 Less and local schools.
The primary goals include educating county residents to the variety, quality, availability and health benefits of locally grown produce; increasing the economic opportunities of agriculture in SJ County; educating and encouraging area youngsters on the health and taste appeal of locally grown produce.

Since its inception five years ago, “Select San Joaquin” has introduced the ag world to thousands of third-grade students from throughout the county.

The third installment of Ag Venture for north San Joaquin County – the one held for Manteca and the south county held last November – is planned for March.
