What are you doing this weekend?

It started in 1860, and it was over in 2013. The San Joaquin County Fair was called off last December, citing low attendance. But 4-H and FFA students don’t have to worry about place to showcase their animals, since several community groups are making it possible for them to have a venue for showing and auctioning off their animals – which makes for nice entertainment for the rest of us. Five day AgFest, a junior livestock and vocational show, is taking place this week, from Tuesday, June 17, to Saturday, June 21, at the county fairgrounds. All exhibitors will compete on Thursday with a gourmet Farm to Fork dinner with restaurants using the freshest of local ingredients held at 6 p.m. and livestock costume contest at 6:30 p.m. Friday will busy with PeeWee Dairy Showmanship at 9:30 a.m., exhibition of 4-H horse champions at 1 p.m. and finally Master Showmanship at 6 p.m. All prizes will be awarded at 8 p.m. and on Saturday, June 21, you can purchase any of the competing animals during an auction.

When was your last real date? Not just a quick trip to the movie theater with a quick bite afterwards, but a real, grown-up, romantic, date? Make some time for yourself and your significant other this Sunday, June 22, and plan to spend your evening at Date, Wine & Dine at the charming Carvalho Family Winery at Old Sugar Mill (35265 Willow Avenue, Clarksburg). There will be wine tasting of Carvalho Wines and New Glory beer, so you can leisurely stroll between various vendors while holding hands and discussing your tasty samples. You can participate at bean bag toss, visit the art show, dance to some music, try your luck during numerous giveaways from radio station NOW 100.5, or have a numerologist read your numbers. And don’t worry, in case you are single (and ready to mingle), this event is also open to everyone looking for their summer love. Do you have your ticket yet? Price: $40 ($15 for designated drivers)

If you were recently thinking about starting out a new hobby, Saturday may be your day. Pack up your courage and join the Central Valley Herpetological Society for their next monthly meeting in the McFall Room at the Manteca Public Library on Saturday, June 21, at 7 p.m. There will be a lot of interesting things to see and hear, because members are encouraged to bring their healthy reptiles to share, so other members can view them (and maybe even pet them). Plus a special guest, NFL superstar and reptile breeder Chad Brown will be present to give a presentation called “The care and caging philosophy for the green tree monitor and porphyraceus ratsnakes.” Sounds interesting? Brown is a current owner of Pro-Exotics and ShipYourReptiles.com so he knows hisssss thingsssss. Don’t misssss thissssss, ssssssse ya there!
