A 34-year-old Hughson man was arrested Wednesday afternoon near the access point for the Ripon bike bridge for allegedly attempting to kidnap a woman at gunpoint.

Officer Brett Delgado was patrolling in the area of Parallel Avenue and Reynolds Drive when he received the radio call that someone was accosting a young female adult near the bridge parking lot adjacent to Highway 99.

Jose Vasquez Sanchez had allegedly attacked the woman who was waiting with a group of young adults headed for the Stanislaus River for a fun afternoon.

Police said Sanchez had demanded sex from the victim and eventually retrieved an altered cut-down shotgun from his vehicle.  Witnesses reported that he had chased after the victim when she ran from him, ending up in the front of a residence on Reynolds Drive where he physically assaulted her.

Sanchez was immediately taken into custody by the patrolman as he arrived on the scene and the weapon was recovered.  He was booked Wednesday afternoon into the San Joaquin County Jail on charges of attempted rape by force, assault with a deadly weapon, false imprisonment, sexual assault and a variety of other charges, police said.
