The Atlas girls of the Manteca Futbol Club leveled up but did not level off, capturing its first tournament trophy in the 11-and-under age group.

And it was no easy feat, despite an overwhelming goal differential.

Braving temperatures in the 90s and down to only one substitute, Atlas defeated the San Juan Spirits in the final of the Cal Cup, 3-1.

The victory completed an unbeaten tour through tournament play at Sacramento’s Cherry Island. Atlas outscored its opponents 13-4 in four matches.

Its run began with a 3-0 win over the Brentwood Impact. Ashleigh Garcia, Kesaia Faasisila and Makaela Cordero found the back of net, while goalie Isabella Paniagua earned the clean sheet.

Goals came in bunches during MFC’s 5-2 win over Folsom, a familiar opponent on the tournament circuit. Jasmine Cochiaosue, Garcia, Faasisila and Savannah Cordero tallied scores for Atlas, which also defeated Elk Grove Orange 2-1 to advance to the Cal Cup final.

There, MFC defeated the tournament host with a bit of magic from Savannah Cordero. She set the tone for the game with a banana kick goal off a corner kick, bending the ball into the back of the net from a near-impossible angle.

Faasisila would extend her scoring streak to four matches with a rocket shot to the left corner, and defender Mysha Mamsa would punctuate the victory with a penalty kick.

Mamsa, Cochiaosue, Ariana Scholten and Makaela Cordero were credited with keeping the Spirits’ offense at bay.
