Isaiah Perez may not have been perfect Tuesday, but he was close.

The burly right hander went the distance for the Manteca Red Sox and allowed just one hit against the Spreckels Park Giants and struck out 12 in a 5-0 Red Sox win Tuesday for the championship in the District 67 Major Tournament of Champions hosted by Manteca Little League.

“It was a great game,” Perez said. “And we got a lot of hits.

“Our defense played really well.”

One after another, a Giant would come up and a Giant would get out — 11 in a row to start the game before Christian Cruz got a single through the infield. Perez struck out the side in the fourth and had at least one strikeout in every inning. Cruz’s single was the only ball to make it out of the Manteca infield for Spreckels Park. The Giants’ only base runner reached on a dropped third strike.

Perez had a good day at the plate, going 2 for 3.

Gabe Ortiz (2 for 3, double, three RBI) sparked a two-run second inning for the Red Sox with an RBI double to score Nico Ilardi and had the big hit in a three-run fifth, plating Ilardi and Briggs Alavezos. Ilardi plated leadoff hitter A.J. Kovacs for the first run of the frame.

“One of the guys who often gets overlooked is Kovacs,” Manteca coach Kevin Alavezos said. “He does a great job behind the plate catching for Perez.

“Perez has been our workhorse all year. And I am so proud of how hard the kids worked this year and how hard they played.”
