A 34-year-old Hughson man that was arrested last week for assault with intent to commit rape near a Ripon park had his bail increased to $2 million.

Jose Vasquez Sanchez has had one day in court where his $1.375 million bail was increased to $2 million with his next court appearance set for Friday at 1:30 p.m. in the Manteca Branch of the San Joaquin County Superior Court.

He had allegedly singled out a 21-year-old female college student from a group of four friends – all Ripon area college students home from Southern California. They had been headed toward the Stanislaus River’s Riparian forest for a rafting trip from the city’s bike bridge area to a nearby beach downstream.

Sanchez had allegedly chased the young woman with a short-barreled shotgun in hand, yelling “I want sex! I want sex!” After shouting to his friends to run, because the man had a gun, a Ripon wrestling champion reversed his course and tackled the suspect and held him down. A friend then ran to a nearby home asking for the name of the street to tell the 911 operator where they were located.

Sanchez is being charged with four felonies in the case, according to the Sheriff’s Department website, and is currently being held in the San Joaquin County Jail in French Camp. He’ll next appear in the Manteca branch of the San Joaquin County Superior Court on Friday at 1:30 p.m.
