Twenty four kids came from all over Northern California and Northern Nevada to compete in the Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit & Run Team Championships last Sunday at Oakland’s O.Co. Coliseum.

Two of those kids were teammates for a Lathrop Little League club.

Eight-year-old Andrew Saldana and Lyon Colon, 10, both placed second in their age divisions. Boys and girls were separated by age: 7-8, 9-10, 11-12 and 13-14. To get to the regional team championships — which all 30 Major League teams hosted — competitors needed to survive local and sectional events.

The goal is for them to be among the top three scorers in their age group nationally. That earns them a trip to Minneapolis for the All-Star Game and the PHR National Finals. Finalists will be announced this Sunday on MLB Network.

Saldana and Colon played for the Lathrop Little League minor-division White Sox during the regular season. Colon returns to action this upcoming weekend as a member of Lathrop’s 9-10-year-old all-star team. Saldana is too young to be an all-star.

The tandem began the PHR process by winning the local competition hosted at Mossdale Park, where Lathrop Little League calls home. The next step was the sectionals, which was put on by Weston Ranch Little League  on May 18 at the August Knodt Elementary diamonds.

Saldana is a student at Lathrop Elementary, whole Colon attends Joseph Widmer School.
