Andrew Olivares of the Northgate Little League 9-10 All-Stars threw the first pitch in District 67 All-Star Tournament consolation contest under the lights of Lincoln Park on Monday.

Olivares also ended it with the defensive play of the game, as he the gunned down the would-be tying run at the plate in the top of the sixth inning. The heads-up play secured Northgate’s thrilling 9-8 victory over Salida while keeping its postseason alive.

Salida is eliminated despite clubbing four home runs, and its pitchers scattered just four hits. The last of its homers came off the bat of Dylan Boney with two out in the sixth. Tyler Turner walked, and cleanup hitter Aaron Wimbley was hit by a pitch to set up Olivares’ heroic play.

Benito Marines, one of Salida’s home run hitters, dropped a bloop single to left behind Olivares, who was playing shortstop. With Turner rounding third, Olivares threw a strike to catcher Ramiro Suarez for the final out.

Winning pitcher Jacob Frisk was otherwise stellar in his three relief innings. He didn’t give up a hit until Boney’s last-inning jack and struck out five.

Northgate never trailed after Scott Armstrong’s grand slam gave it a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Marines knotted it at 7-7 in the third with his three-run homer. Troy Brogan also tagged a homer for Salida, this one for two runs, in the top of the second.

Northgate was able to score three of its runs on wild pitches. Eric Morales drove in two runs on singles and finished 2 for 4. Leadoff hitter Eric Victoria walked in all four of his at-bats while plating three runs.

Northgate awaits the loser of today’s Manteca-Tracy National winners-bracket quarterfinal. Earlier Monday, Weston Ranch defeated Patterson to advance in the consolation bracket.
