Manteca Police crime briefs

The following is a summary of the significant events the Manteca Police handled during the past week: 

 

• BANK ROBBERY UPDATE: On June 3, the Bank of the West was robbed. The suspect appears to be a middle-aged White male adult of medium height and build, with short gray hair, unshaven and wearing prescription eye glasses. The suspect wore a gray and white colored baseball cap, black T-shirt, gray shorts, white ankle socks and gray tennis shoes. Anyone with information on the suspect’s identity or whereabouts is asked to contact the investigating Detective at jbonetti@ci.manteca.ca.us or anonymously by calling Crimestoppers at 823-INFO.  Subject wanted in connection with a bank robbery 

 

• ASSAULT: On June 26, shortly after 2 p.m., a man followed a female from the Walmart parking lot to the 700 block of Mission Ridge Drive as she pushed her baby in a stroller. The suspect then approached the female and groped her buttocks area. He then ran off, last seen headed north on Burgundy Lane. The suspect is described as a Hispanic male in his early 30s, about 5’7”, with a stocky build. He has very short hair or is bald, a dark complexion, no facial hair, and was wearing a blue collared shirt with red trim and dark shorts. Anyone with information on the identity of the suspect is asked to contact the investigating Officer at eeichel@ci.manteca.ca.us or by calling Crimestoppers at 823-INFO. 

 

• SHOOTING: On June 26, Officers responded to the 200 block of West Wetmore Avenue regarding a shooting that had just occurred. The victim reported that a subject who was known to him had just shot at him in front of his residence. The victim, who had not been struck, said he was standing next to a vehicle when the incident occurred. The vehicle was struck, as was another vehicle in the area. The victim identified the suspect as 23-year-old Rudy Valber. According to the victim, he and Valber had a disagreement prior to the incident. The victim was standing outside of his residence when Valber came speeding by and swerved at the victim. The victim swung a rake and hit Valber’s car as he passed. The victim and suspect then exchanged some words and Valber stopped his vehicle and fired 3-4 shots at the victim. Valber got back into his vehicle and sped away. Officers were able to locate Valber a short time later at Union Road and Todd Street where a felony car stop was conducted. Valber was taken into custody without incident. Valber was booked for assault with a deadly weapon, attempted homicide, drug violations and for participating in a street gang

 

• DUI CHECKPOINT: On June 27, members of the Manteca Police Department conducted a DUI and driver’s license checkpoint in the 1000 block of West Yosemite Avenue. Traffic targeted was headed eastbound for the checkpoint. A total of 589 vehicles went through the checkpoint. There were five sets of field sobriety tests administered and one person was arrested for DUI. Two drivers were cited for driving when suspended and five vehicles were impounded. Manteca Police Explorers assisted with logistics. 

 

• ATTEMPTED ROBBERY: On July 1, Officers were dispatched to an attempted armed robbery at the Union Liquor & Mini Mart on West Yosemite Avenue. Officers contacted the clerk, who told them the suspect walked into the store displaying a handgun. The suspect immediately demanded money. When the clerk refused to give him any money, the suspect fled from the store. The suspect was described as a white male adult who was wearing a black, hooded sweatshirt, black pants, and had a black handgun. The suspect was last seen headed northbound over the fence leading into the Westwood Village Apartments on Center Street. Officers made checks of the area but were unable to locate the suspect. 

 

• THEFT/PURSUIT: On July 1, an Officer was on patrol near JC Penney, when he was directed to a white vehicle that was related to a theft. The Officer attempted to stop the vehicle, which sped off, eastbound on Highway 120. A pursuit was initiated and the vehicle attempted to flee as it accelerated and began to drive recklessly. 

Upon reaching the Austin Road off-ramp, the vehicle abruptly swerved across all three lanes of the freeway at approximately 80 mph, in front of a tractor-trailer rig and exited the freeway. Officers were unable to follow the vehicle off of the freeway and the pursuit was then terminated. The identity of the suspect is known and he is wanted in relation to other thefts at JC Penney stores in the area.
