Dr. Glen Shirk was once the pediatrician to Jake Parks.

“He was also my pastor in high school,” the young elected official added.

Shirk along with his wife, Lois, were acknowledged for their efforts during the years at Tuesday’s Ripon City Council meeting.

“They did a lot of work for the community but they also chose to do it behind the scenes,” Parks said. “They didn’t do it for the recognition and praise.”

They received that recognition and praise for their outstanding contributions with a City of Ripon proclamation.

“Dr. Glen Shirk and his wife Lois have blessed the residents of Ripon the past 33 years through their commitment, spiritual leadership, compassion and service,” said Mayor Chuck Winn, reading the proclamation.

They raised five children and Dr. Shirk, who had a practice in Modesto, worked part-time until 2007. On top of that, he had his ministry at Ripon Grace Church.

“Lois played a tremendous role as church administrator and women’s Bible study leader,” Winn said.

Dr. Shirk was surprised about the honor.

“It was a privilege to work and live in Ripon,” he said.

Besides Parks, the other elected leaders had fond memories of the Shirks.

“I met them as parents,” said Leo Zuber, who was a principal for Ripon Unified prior to becoming superintendent. At the time, the Shirk children attended his school.

“I knew the public persona (of the Shirks) but I also knew them as the mom and dad. They were the same in each case – always a pleasure to be around,” he said.
