SONORA – The Sierra High varsity boys basketball team got a huge 3-point bucket from Eddie Andrade with 25 seconds remaining, and survived a last-ditch effort from the Sonora Wildcats in a 36-34 come-from-behind victory Wednesday in Valley Oak League play.

The Timberwolves opened with a sluggish start, mustering up just 11 first half points to trail Sonora 17-11 at the intermission. Sierra would open the second half on a different page, outscoring Sonora by eight points to take the lead.

The Timberwolves (6-3 VOL, 13-7) used Andrade’s 3-pointer to take the lead, and made it sustain with full-court pressure on Sonora as they tried to steal the victory on a final desperation heave.

“The whole game was just very disappointing the way we played,” Sierra High head coach Scott Thomason said. “We had poor performances all the way around.

“But for us to grind out a win at Sonora, we’ll take it.”
Sierra was led by William Ward who turned a game-high 19 points. The Timberwolves will look to make it three straight in VOL play when they play host to the Ceres Bulldogs Friday.

East Union 67, Ceres 54
CERES – The Lancers held a slim 29-27 halftime lead before pulling away late in the fourth quarter for a 67-54 win over Ceres High.

East Union (4-4, 9-9) rode the clutch free throw shooting of freshman Jordan Kron to victory, as the first-year guard sank 11 of 15 free throws in the contest, and 8 of 10 in a stretch that included four technical fouls and one flagrant.

“It was a close game throughout, no team was up by more than three or four the entire game,” Lancer head coach Brett Lewis said. “In that fourth quarter their coach got two “T’s” and the bench got a “T” and Jordan made eight of the shots.

“He really made them pay late in the fourth.”

Kron led all scorers with 22, while teammates Teejay Gordon and Robert Vaughn added 16 and 12, respectively. Ricky Inderbitzin finished with 10 points, nine boards in the win. The Lancers will continue on the road, when they travel to Sonora to battle the Wildcats.

Manteca 54, Oakdale 36
OAKDALE – Manteca jumped out to a 36-13 halftime lead and never looked back, cruising to an easy 54-36 VOL win.

Ernie Pimentel led the Buffaloes with 14 points, while teammate Kiwi Gardner added 10.

“The second quarter we were able to take over,” Manteca head coach Dave Asuncion said. “Ernie got us going by hitting a couple of three’s and we really got going from there.

“We got better in certain areas; it was a good team win.”

E.J. Godfrey and C.J. Rivas rounded out the Buffaloe scoring with nine and seven points, respectively.
