Eleven-year-old Riponian Brett Zimmerman was one of 15 players chosen to compete for the Northwest Region in the United States Specialty Sports Association All-American Games starting this Thursday at the ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Fla.

To make the squad, Zimmerman had to stand out in a regional showcase that took place May 10 at the Manteca Big League Dreams. Players were graded on their hitting, running, throwing, fielding and pitching. Another Northwest showcase was held in Tacoma, Wash. on May 16.

A special selection show aired online May 30 at 6 p.m., revealing players who were picked for the 9-under to 14-under teams.

The Northwest is pitted against teams from the Far West, Central and Midwest regions in Pool A. Pool B consists of clubs from the Northeast, Atlantic, Great Lakes and Southeast. Championship games will be played Monday, Aug. 4.

Zimmerman is a student at Park View Elementary in Ripon. He aspires to play college ball and study dermatology. He plays for the Fighting Ducks, a competitive traveling team rated No. 9 in the USSSA Northern California rankings.
