The first day of school at Ripon Unified School is Thursday, Aug. 14.

Prior to that, Ripon High has arranged for the annual Pow Wow – that’s the registration period for freshmen, sophomores, junior and seniors – to take place on Aug. 6-7 at the Multi-Purpose Room.

Students can pick-up their books and class schedules during that time while have their school ID taken, make payments on their yearbooks, and take care of other matters for the new school year.

Freshmen orientation is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, in the North Gym.

They’ll be led by upperclassmen involved in Link Crew. Their year-long goal is to make these ninth grade students comfortable in their new surroundings.

Link Crew will kick things off with various icebreaking activities as part of the plan.

A few changes will take place at the elementary school sites.

For starters, Weston School will be on a year-long hiatus due to construction taking place on the voter-approved Measure G modernization.

Students and staff will be shuffled throughout the other elementary sites – Park View (Kindergarten / first grade), Ripona (second / third), Colony Oak (fourth through sixth), and Ripon Elementary (seventh / eighth) – with Weston scheduled to reopen by July 2015. By then, work on the $10.5 million project is expected to be completed.

Plans also call for Weston eighth graders to have their own promotional exercises separate from Ripon Elementary.

For the first time, RUSD is offering Transitional Kindergarten.

Youngsters must be age 5 by Sept. 1 in order to qualify for the two-year program designed under the “Kindergarten Readiness Act” that time to develop the social, emotional and academic skills necessary to achieve success in the school and in the future.

TK will be held at Ripon Elementary and Ripona Elementary, from 8:15 a.m. to 2 p.m.

In addition, Ziggy Roberson is the new principal at Colony Oak.
