Manteca Unified’s third high school campus is reaching a milestone this month.

Twenty years ago, Sierra High School on Thomas Street, opened its doors to the first batch of students. Greeting the young Timberwolves was the school’s first principal, Rick Arucan.

After two decades, the principal remains a familiar name on campus even though he has since retired from his post. That’s because henceforth, the school’s main building will be known as the Frederick H. Arucan Administration Building. The naming of the front-office building was approved by the Board of Trustees several months ago. Arucan’s name was picked by a committee which received recommendations from the public prior to the final selection.

The dedication of the Arucan Building, to be held Tuesday, Aug. 19, will be part of a series of celebratory events marking the 20th year of the school. The day will begin with a school picture taking at 9:30 a.m., with the dedication ceremonies set for 3:30 p.m.

The three-month-long series of events to highlight the school’s historic benchmark will begin with a 5K Fun Run on Saturday, Aug. 16, at 9 a.m., and will culminate with the annual Sierra Hall of Fame reception at Chez Shari restaurant at the Manteca Golf Course on Sunday, Oct. 26, at 5:30 p.m.

The rest of the anniversary events are as follows:

• Friday, Sept. 5, at 7 p.m., Alumni Band performance at the Home Football game.

• Saturday, Oct. 4, 6 p.m., Sierra Booster Club’s 20th anniversary dinner-dance starting at 6 p.m.

• Friday, Oct. 24, at 7 p.m., Homecoming Football Game vs. East Union.
