TURLOCK — East Union High’s varsity wrestling team brought just four competitors at Pitman High’s 5th Annual Rumble in the Jungle Saturday, but all four produced noteworthy results.

Jason Cortez led the way by grabbing the 132-pound title, and East Union ended up a more-than-respectable 11th place with 69 points — one place and 19 points better than rival Sierra.

Lathrop finished 17th with 33 points, and Manteca placed 23rd out of the 28 schools represented. Granite Bay (200.5), Golden Valley (176.5) and Turlock (129.5) were the top three squads.

Cortez edged out Pitman’s Derrick Avila 5-4 to earn his gold medal. Marco Castaneda also made it to the title round at 127 pounds but lost by technical fall, 16-1, to Turlock standout Fabian Garcia — the Sac-Joaquin Section’s top-ranked 119-pounder according to The California Wrestler.

Also battling his way to a finals match was Sierra’s Alex Nuanez, who lost 7-0 to Gustavo Verver of Pitman. Nuanez is ranked fourth at 171 in the section, while Verver is sixth at 189.

Also placing in the top eight from the area were: Luis Oregel (seventh) of Lathrop at 121; Christian Pena (seventh) of Lathrop at 137; Chris DeGuzman (fifth) of Lathrop and Parsa Davari (sixth) of East Union at 142; Mark Maynard (seventh) of Lathrop and Sean Cerveny (eighth) of Manteca at 162; Ray Widmer (third) and Greg Cardenas (eighth) of Sierra at 217; and Devon Woodall (fifth) of East Union at 287.

Dawn 2 Dusk
KENTFIELD — Weston Ranch was well represented despite having just six grapplers available for Saturday’s Dawn 2 Dusk Tournament at Marin Catholic High.

Daniel Garcia was one of three Cougars to take first, as he won all three of his matches by pinfall. Robert Gonzales and Travis Bowen each went 2-0.

Grant Marr and heavyweight Faga Tia both took second with 2-1 records. Daniel Guzman had the busiest day, finishing 3-3 for sixth.
