It pays to have an older sibling.

That was the case for Ripon High freshman Alyssa Thweatt on Thursday.

Her brother, Zach Thweat, a junior, arrived early for the school’s annual Pow Wow. “He was able to save a place for us in line,” said Greg Zamora, Alyssa and Zach’s father.

Zach woke up that morning at 7 o’clock, hustling to the Ripon High Multi-Purpose Room in order to secure his position at the front of the line.

On this day, Pow Wow, the annual registration period at RHS, was set up for freshmen and sophomores to pick up their class schedules, submit necessary forms for the upcoming school year, take school ID, or pay for yearbooks and other matters.

They also collected their text books in the school library.

Incidentally, Zach went through the Pow Wow process that previous day set aside for juniors and seniors.

“(Pow Wow) is always a little chaotic but at least everything gets done in those two days. But it makes easy on us for the start of the new school year,” said RHS office supervisor Mary Machado, who relies heavily on the support of volunteers.

She added: “We have a great group of parent volunteers – we couldn’t do (Pow Wow) without them.”

This was all done in preparation for the first day of school on Thursday, Aug. 14.

Zach, for one, is looking forward to returning to the class room. “I’m really not looking forward to History (class),” he said.

Alyssa, his sister, will be adjusting to her new surroundings. She was at Park View Elementary School.

“I’m looking to playing sports,” said Alyssa Thweat, who is a soccer player.

She also has freshmen orientation next week in the form of Link Crew.

That’s when upperclassmen throw their support to the newcomers of the school by engaging them in a variety of ice-breaking activities while serving as mentors throughout the school year.

The Link Crew event is scheduled at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the North Gym.
