Verizon land line telephone customers in Ripon experienced a loss of dial tones in their handsets as well as interruption in their Internet and Wi-Fi services over the weekend.  While intermittent loss of service was first reported early on Saturday it became widespread about noon with some customers thinking the interruption was either in their computers or in their routers.

One Ripon customer said she thought her iCloud storage had dissipated and went to a Modesto store to purchase more – quickly finding that didn’t help her problem.  Another who said he has had problems with a router during the past year said he didn’t give thought to a loss in telephone land line service – spending over an hour working on the problem to no avail.   He said he received a call from his wife about 5:30 p.m. Saturday from the San Jose area asking why he wasn’t answering the phone.  His cell phone had been turned off and was charging and the land line was not ringing.  He said she was worried.

Lt. Steve Merchant of the Ripon Police Department said his dispatch center had been involved in the loss of service and 911 emergency calls had to be rerouted through the Manteca Police Department’s dispatchers with cell phone and radio contact then being made with Ripon’s dispatch center.

Merchant said he had been advised that the Ripon dispatch center should be back in regular operation by 5 p.m. Monday.  He noted that the 911 rerouting did not cause any additional emergencies to members of the community calling for service.

While much of the telephone service was back on line Sunday morning, some customers reported temporarily losing their dial tones once again.  Contact with the Verizon Communication Center through its 800 number electronically restored router connections allowing residents to get online once again, according to the users.
