Weston Ranch successfully defended its Stagg Brown and Gold Cup crown on Saturday, securing the championship with a 2-0 win over the host team.

The Cougars completed the two-day tournament with three successive shutouts on Saturday, and their two leading scorers from a year ago were among the standouts. Joseph Mayorca led the way with four goals, while Hector Maldonado added three. Goalkeeper Eduardo Acosta is credited with the three clean sheets.

Weston Ranch’s toughest opponent turned out to be its first: reigning Modesto Metro Conference champion Modesto.

Maldonado scored twice in the second half to break a 2-2 tie. The two sides traded goals in the first half starting with Mayorca’s finish off a Kevin Medina cross. Medina later converted a penalty kick after Mayorca was fouled inside the 18-yard box. Arthur Garcia assisted one of Maldonado’s goals.

On Saturday, Weston Ranch blanked three fellow Stockton schools. Alex Gonzales and Mayorca provided the goals in a 2-0 victory over Chavez. Omar Centeno and Garcia each had an assist.

The Cougars then rolled past St. Mary’s, 3-0. All scoring was done in the second half. Mayorca struck for two goals with assists from Francisco Garcia and Medina. Medina also assisted Angel Portillo’s score.

Weston Ranch capped it off with a 2-0 win against Stagg, with goals coming from Maldonado (Francisco Garcia assist) and Arthur Garcia (Gonzales).
