The Sierra High varsity boys basketball team had little trouble taking care of business against the visiting Oakdale Mustangs, dominating on every facet in a 60-32 Valley Oak League win Wednesday.

Sierra (10-3 VOL, 17-7) scored in double-digits in each quarter, while holding the Mustangs to single-digits in all but one of the four quarters.

“Things went back-and-forth at the beginning of the game,” Sierra head coach Scott Thomason said. “But then we were able to make a run by getting to the free throw line and converting.

“We had a strong second quarter and were able to pull away.”
The Timberwolves closed out the first-half outscoring Oakdale 18-4. Sophomore Will Ward was accountable for the majority of the output on his way to a 14 point outing. Hot shooting senior Trevor Nogueira led all scorers with 19.

Oakdale (5-8, 8-15) could not get anything going on the offensive end, getting 10-point efforts from Blake Thompson and Jake Martinez in the losing effort.

“I was pleased with our effort especially on the defensive end,” Thomason said. “Our goal was to try and hold them under 35 points, and we were able to do that.

“Now, we have to have a good practice tomorrow and get ready for the next one.”

Sierra will definitely have its hands full Friday when they make the short trek crosstown, seeking revenge from a 64-48 loss to the Buffaloes back on Jan. 20.

Ceres 67, Lathrop 38
LATHROP – The Spartans’ struggles continued with a VOL loss to the Ceres Bulldogs Wednesday.

Umar Muriset led the Spartans with a 20-point outing, while teammate Aivery Lewis chipped in with a baker’s dozen.

Lathrop (0-14, 0-23) will try and salvage a win in one of its two remaining league games, as they play host to the Weston Ranch Cougars Friday, followed by a trip to East Union Feb. 17.
