Buying a gift for a patient in Doctors Hospital of Manteca’s gift shop underwrites medical scholarships for second-year college students in the community.

Since the hospital first opened in 1962 the hospital auxiliary has been welcoming applications from students interested in careers in nursing and other areas of the health care profession.  Current applications for the 2010/2011 academic year are now available at the hospital’s front desk in the main lobby.

Earl Pimentel and Gayle Foster are serving as co-chairs of the scholarship committee.  Pimentel pointed out that the scholarships are renewable year after year until a student graduates.

Scholarship applicants are open to graduates of high schools from Manteca and Ripon unified school districts.  They must currently be second year students or will be second year students next year at the community college or the college/university level.

The applicants are reviewed on a variety of levels including their grade point averages, volunteer history, honors and leadership experience.

Pimentel recalled one student from East Union High School, Scott Hadley, who was granted continuing college funding by the auxiliary through his internship following medical school.  Pimentel prides the thank you letter the auxiliary received from Dr. Scott Hadley, he said. “One of our greatest thrills,” he added.

The gift shop operation has helped to underwrite careers for hundreds of students to become doctors and nurses over the last 48 years as well as in pathology, speech therapy and pharmacy with students now attending the pharmacy school at UOP in Stockton.  They have given as many as 15 scholarships in any one year.
