TRUCKEE  (AP) — A major cross-country ski race in the Sierra Nevada has been canceled for the third time in four years due to a lack of snow.

The 18.6-mile Great Ski Race between Tahoe City and Truckee had been scheduled for March 1.

In its 39-year history, the race had only been canceled once prior to the winter of 2010-2011.

Chris McConnell of the Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue Team told Truckee’s Sierra Sun the cancellations are “starting to look like a trend.”

The race draws between 500 and 1,000 competitors annually.

The dry winter earlier prompted cancellation of World Cup skicross and snowboardcross races at the Squaw Valley resort in early March.

The current Sierra snowpack is well below average for a fourth straight winter.
